About The Project
50th Street is at the heart of downtown Yellowknife. It is affectionately known as Range Street by locals. It is home to The Gold Range Hotel and Bar – arguably the most storied bar in Canada’s Far North.
The street itself is a throwback to the rugged frontier town the city once was. It is a place where public intoxication, fighting and drug use are rampant. But the bars and restaurants on this street are also frequented by politicians, civil servants, musicians, and tourists who rub elbows with First Nations leaders, elders and youth. On any given day you can find food, drink, arguments, dancing, happiness, sadness, heartbreak and love.
Range Street represents something different to everyone who knows it: to some, it is a community of misfits and to others, a caring family. To some an embarrassment and to others a wonderful neighborhood.
Filmmakers Jay Bulckaert, Pablo Saravanja and photojournalist, Pat Kane, hope to document this unique street in Yellowknife and to share the wonderfully weird stories of the people who call Range Street home.
